The Galison Group was founded as Galison Manufacturing in 1977 by Peter Thorburn. A degreed mechanical engineer, Peter decided to start his own business after managing a company that supplied mining equipment for many years.

Starting in a small garage-type workshop supplying scraper runners, the company grew quickly and, just five years later, it settled into its present home in Welkom.

It fast became one of the top suppliers of freight wagons, scrapers, grizzlies and chutes to the mining industry, and our production space grew to 20 000m³ over four sites.

To further expand our footprint, we added to the Galison Group with Galison Drilling in 1985, Galison Zambia in 2000 and Galnorth Drilling in 2008.

More recent developments have seen Galison becoming one of the largest independent manufacturers of Rolling Stock in Southern Africa.

Today, Galison Group employs 350 people at five manufacturing sites in Welkom and Rustenburg in South Africa, and two manufacturing and service sites in Kitwe, Zambia. And as one of the main mining equipment suppliers and rolling stock companies in Africa, we service customers across the continent and in many other parts of the world with a wide range of mining equipment, rolling stock and heavy fabrications.

We strive to be a leading supplier of mining and railway equipment to the mining industry, both locally and internationally.

Because our management and staff have also gained years of experience while working with our customers in the development of this type of equipment, we have confidence in our quality that we export our products all over the world.
