$2 Million Contract for South African Manufacturing Company
South African company, Galison Manufacturing has, secured a $2-Million contract from a Canadian company for the design, manufacture and delivery of 100 Rock-flow ore cars against some fierce international competition.

South African company, Galison Manufacturing has, secured a $2-Million contract from a Canadian company for the design, manufacture and delivery of 100 Rock-flow ore cars against some fierce international competition.

Galison Manufacturing’s Chairman, Peter Thorburn explains that the cars are similar to the train that the company designed and supplied to Anglogold’s Kopanong Gold Mine some 2 ½ years ago.

“We have recently delivered the first batch of 28 and the remaining cars will be shipped “soon”. He said.

Galison Manufacturing is part of the Galison Group of companies that has operations in both South Africa and Zambia.

The company was formed in 1977 and has grown into a major manufacturer and supplier of heavy and medium fabrications including underground and surface rolling stock, transfer chutes, ore cars, scrapers, grizzlies, general steelwork and drilling equipment.

The company employs 250 people at four of its manufacturing sites in Welkom, South Africa and additional people at its two manufacturing and service sites in Kalulushi, Zambia. The head office is situated in Johannesburg and a new facility on the Reef is currently in development.

Galison’s main factories are situated in Welkom in the Free State and the covered workshop area is about 18 000m serviced by 24 electric overhead cranes from 5ton up to 40ton capacity and a further 2500m2 of open crane gantry is also employed.

Thorburn says that the company is well equipped with modern machinery for heavy and medium fabrication and machining and all work is done in line with the company’s ISO 9001/2000 listing to meet International Quality Standards. Galison’s products are distributed to all the hard rock underground mines and surface operations in Southern Africa. These include KCM, Mopani, Anglogold, Anglo Platinum, Impala Platinum, Lonmin, Goldfields, major steel mills, coalmines and quarries.

Galison has achieved major success in recent years with exports into Africa including among others, Zambia, Ghana, Tanzania, Botswana and Zimbabwe. The company’s products are also exported to countries around the world including Peru, Fiji, Australia, Canada and Russia.

Johan Fourie, Sales Manager at Galison sums up what Galison feels in saying “We are delighted with this new contract and look forward to establishing more national as well as international partnerships.”
